Thyroid Meal Planning That Works With Your Medication
A doctor-led thyroid diet plan by Dr Bhavi Mody for steadier energy, healthier weight, stronger hair and calmer digestion. It is built around your lab reports, your thyroid tablet routine and the food you already eat, in Mumbai or anywhere in the world.
- 30+ years of medical experience behind every thyroid diet plan
- Hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s and borderline (subclinical) thyroid meal planning
- Menus in your cuisine: Indian, Gulf, North American or Singaporean
- 100% online consultations for USA, Canada, Dubai, UAE and Singapore, or visit our Matunga clinic
Thyroid problems are common and often missed. About one in ten Indian adults has hypothyroidism, and nearly a third of cases go undiagnosed. Most women leave the clinic with a prescription and a vague “avoid cabbage and soy” warning. A personalised thyroid meal plan fills that gap.

1. Medical Challenges
Thyroid hormone sets the pace for nearly every organ, so food, medication timing and lifestyle can steady it or disrupt it. In the US, an estimated 20 million people have thyroid disease, up to 60% are unaware of it, and women are five to eight times more likely than men to be affected. Dr Bhavi Mody hears the same concerns from Mumbai to Toronto: thyroid
- Weight gain you can’t explain
A slower metabolism and fluid retention. Skipping meals or crash dieting usually makes it worse. - Fatigue, brain fog and low mood
Often linked to erratic meals and low iron, B12 or vitamin D alongside low thyroid hormone. - Hair fall, dry skin and brittle nails
Protein, iron, zinc and selenium gaps frequently sit behind them. - Constipation, bloating and acidity
A sluggish gut needs the right fibre, fluids and meal rhythm. - Medication confusion
Tea, coffee, calcium, iron, soy and supplements can change how well your thyroid tablet is absorbed. - Cycle, fertility and mood changes
Thyroid health overlaps with PCOS/PMOS, pregnancy planning and perimenopause.
You don’t need a list of banned foods. You need a clear, sustainable thyroid diet plan matched to your TSH, your medication timing and your kitchen.
Online advice is contradictory: avoid soy, go gluten-free, add iodine, take biotin. Without clinical guidance these shortcuts can backfire. Kelp and high-dose iodine can aggravate thyroid problems, and biotin supplements can distort thyroid blood tests.
2. Solutions Via Thyroid Meal Planning
Meal planning turns thyroid nutrition into daily routine, with no guesswork and no conflicting advice.
- Clinical and lab review.
TSH, T3/T4, anti-TPO, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, medications and symptoms are assessed first. - Thyroid-supportive nutrition.
Protein at every meal, fibre-rich millets, pulses and vegetables, and food-first sources of selenium, zinc, iron and vitamin D. Iodised salt stays in moderation (under 5 g of salt a day), with minimal ultra-processed food and added sugar. - A medication-smart schedule.
Meals, tea or coffee, and calcium or iron are timed around your thyroid tablet so absorption stays consistent. - Culturally adapted menus.
Gujarati, Maharashtrian, South Indian, Jain and vegetarian plans, plus Gulf, American, Canadian and Singaporean menus, with grocery lists for where you shop. - Review after every test.
Your plan is refined after each repeat thyroid test, dose change or life stage.

3. Why “Customised” Thyroid Meal Planning Matters
A woman eating home-cooked dal and roti in Matunga, a mother in Dubai balancing family dinners, and a professional in Toronto or Singapore eating out four days a week need three different plates. All three need the same foundations: steady blood sugar, enough protein and consistent medication timing.
Dr Bhavi Mody says,
Nobody should have to give up their food culture to manage their thyroid. We build the plan around your meals, your medication and your lab values, so it is one you can actually keep following.
4. The Results
Outcomes vary and are tracked through symptom diaries, measurements and repeat lab review, alongside your treating doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions on Thyroid Meal Planning & Diets
What is the best diet for hypothyroidism?
No single diet suits everyone, but the most effective pattern is built on expert medical care and as per your reports. Dr Bhavi Mody tailors it to your TSH, medication and regionally available cuisine.
How does an online thyroid consultation work from the USA, Canada, Dubai or Singapore?
You complete a health assessment and share your latest thyroid reports and medications. You then receive an individualised weekly meal plan with local grocery lists and follow-up reviews, scheduled across time zones. It suits vegetarian, vegan, Indian and international cuisines.
Which foods should I avoid with a thyroid problem? Do I have to give up cabbage, soy or gluten?
Usually not. Cooked cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are fine in normal portions. Soy is best kept away from your tablet time. Going gluten-free helps only if you have coeliac disease or a confirmed sensitivity, so we check before restricting. Excess kelp, iodine and biotin supplements are the real things to question.
How should I prepare food and tea with levothyroxine?
It is commonly advised to take it on an empty stomach with water, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, tea or coffee, and to separate calcium and iron supplements by about four hours. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. We then build your meal timings around that routine.
Can a thyroid diet help me lose weight?
Yes, gradually, and only alongside the right medication dose. Crash diets cost muscle and slow metabolism further. Safer thyroid weight management uses adequate protein, portion-aware meals, fibre, strength training and good sleep.
My TSH is borderline (subclinical). Does diet matter?
It does, because borderline results should be monitored, not ignored. In a ten-year review of nearly 13,000 UAE patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, about 6.5% went on to develop overt hypothyroidism, and around two-thirds of those were women. A balanced plan, nutrient checks and regular retesting give you the best footing.
Is a thyroid meal plan different for pregnancy, PCOS or perimenopause?
Needs for iodine, iron and protein shift with each stage, and thyroid issues are common in pregnancy: a nine-state Indian study found 13.13% of pregnant women were hypothyroid. We coordinate your plan with your gynaecologist or endocrinologist.
